Asana AI for Work Skill Badge

How do you help hesitant users embrace AI?
Organization

Asana

Target audience
  • Existing Asana customers
  • Potential Asana customers
  • Professionals new to using AI
Overview

The AI for Work Skill Badge was developed as part of Asana's Collaborative Work Management Certification program, which helps businesses reach their goals more efficiently by upskilling teams on Asana tools and best practices for workflow development.
Role

I designed a skill badge course that took Asana’s customers from AI skeptics to confident users—through a mix of expert-driven content, multimodal learning, and iterative design. This free, 2-hour elearning program focused specifically on boosting productivity with AI.

Approach

To create the AI for Work Skill Badge, I applied a backward design approach, which started by defining success: customers must be able to confidently use AI in their everyday work in Asana.

To meet this goal, I applied the "I do, we do, you do" teaching strategy for gradually releasing responsibility to learners. Based on customer research, I decided that this approach would work well for our audience, since many were new to AI and felt apprehensive about using AI in day-to-day work.
Working with SMEs

To ensure the skill badge was grounded in best practices, I first engaged subject matter experts (SMEs) in a discovery phase by conducting semi-structured interviews. I compiled interview findings and reported back to my stakeholders before proceeding with curriculum development.

I worked closely with SMEs while developing learning outcomes and performance objectives, and to clarify key competencies.

I also engaged a volunteer "go-to SME"  who committed 2-3 hours weekly to support a 4-week content development push. This SME was instrumental in helping me develop instructional content and "Yeti Tips," our animated creature "pro tips" for using AI in the Asana platform. I also worked with SMEs to align on terminology and platform best practices, test and iterate on activities, and check the veracity of quiz questions, answer choices, and distractors.
Content development

I wrote and edited course copy, engaged our graphic design team for images requests, and developed evaluation questions to support ongoing course improvement.

After developing the course in Articulate Rise, and conducting an alpha testing phase, I revisited the course structure to respond to a stakeholder request to realign the course with Asana's recently-updated collaborative work management framework, and to enhance content on privacy and security, which was a major concern for our alpha testing group.

We retested the course with an internal beta test, made minor revisions and content changes following QA, and released the product to the general public in October 2024.

Testing and improving

To further refine the course, in early 2025, I collaborated with the video team to produce three new educational videos to enhance and reinforce the content.

I scripted the videos, engaged SMEs for content review, piloted a live review process with the video team, and led table reads with voice actors.

Videos were produced and animated in March 2025, and released the following month.
Impact

Evaluation outcomes were overwhelmingly positive. 600+ course completers responded to the evaluation survey.

Respondents had a 4.5/5 overall course satisfaction, with 98% reporting that the skill badge enabled them with skills to grow their career.

Additionally, 67% affirmed that as a result of the course, they knew how to leverage Asana AI to optimize work and collaboration.

One respondent stated, "I was able to learn about the practical use of Asana AI in a systematic and comprehensive way."

In addition, the AI for Work Skill Badge contributed to the wider success of the Collaborative Work Management  Certification initiative, leading to:
  • 14,000+ unique credentials issued across three skill badges
  • 1.2M+ impressions to a product release announcement on Linkedin
  • 3,000+ new sales leads
